Guru Teg Bahadur gave his head to Aurangzeb, not hair

There are disturbing reports that a Sikh youth Inderpreet Singh's hair was forcibly cut by some miscreants. It is reported that jealosy and rivalry in a love affair was behind this shameful act. The accused has been named as Arjun Meena, which seems to be a Hindu name. This is a matter of great shame.

When Kashmiri Hindus were being massacred by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, they had approached all non-Muslim rulers of various parts of India. The Rajputs, the Marathas, and the Sikhs were the only forces that could save them. The Marathas were too far away. The Rajputs had been weakened by decades of Mughal attacks. The Sikhs, led by the Ninth Sikh Guru -- Guru Teeg Bahadur -- came to the rescue of the Kashmiri Pandits. This was in the year 1675.

The Sikhs fought valiantly against the Mughals. Aurangzeb was forced to abandon the massacre of the Kashmiri Hindus and bring his armies back to Delhi to save him from the Sikhs. This is the only reason there are still some Hindus left in Kashmir. If not for the Sikhs, Hinduism would have been completely obliterated from there, like it has now been completely obliterated from Pakistan, and Buddhism from Afghanistan, Central Asia, etc.

But eventually the Sikhs were overwhelmed by the far larger Mughal armies (in which most of the solders were Hindu, many were valiant Rajput soldiers sent to serve the Mughals by smaller Rajput kingdoms who had made peace with the Mughals).

Guru Teg Bahadur was captured later in the year in 1675 itself and brought to the Mughal Court in Delhi. Aurangzeb told him that he would let him go with his life if he was willing to cut off his hair.

This was tantamount to asking the Sikh Guru -- the top Sikh religious leader -- to give up Sikhism. Because the Sikh religion requires him to keep his hair. If Guru Teg Bahadur had done that, Sikhs would have lost all self-respect. Sikhism would have been destroyed as a religion. Aurangzeb's decade-long efforts to convert the Sikhs to Islam would have finally succeeded.

Guru Teg Bahadur politely answered that he would gift the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb not only his hair, but his head along with it.

Aurangzeb then ordered the execution of Guru Teg Bahadur.

He gave his head because he was not willing to cut his hair.

With this knowledge, seeing the conduct of Arjun Meena and the other miscreants who cut off Inderjit's hair is especially deplorable.

All attempts must be done by Hindus to compensate for this crime in any manner possible.

Sikhs have already gone on the rampage with swords and other weapons in Jaipur and other parts of Punjab. Hindus must not react with violence.

Sikhs are not Muslims. Mahatma Gandhi's appeasement of Muslims did not work. But Sikhs are very different.

All 10 Sikh Gurus were born in Hindu families. Sikhism never had a problem with Hinduism till Indira Nehru used Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to create Hindu-Sikh disunity in Punjab to win elections there with Hindu vote bank defeating the Akali Dal. Later Pakistan used Bhindranwale and the situation went completely out of hand.

Sikhism was Hinduism's response to 600 years of Islamic invasions.

Sikhism and Hinduism are meant to co-exist in peace.

The damage done by Indira Nehru to 500-year-old Hindu-Sikh unity in Punjab was repaired by the brave Sikh son of India K P S Gill.

No further damage must be allowed to happen.

If you are Hindu, forward this article to all your Sikh friends. It is difficult to apologize for other people's crimes and talk about sensitive subjects. This article will fulfil that purpose. It will be a silent "Thank you" from you to your Sikh friends on behalf of Hinduism for the sacrifices they have made to save your brothers and sisters in Kashmir from Aurangzeb. We have never thanked them for it. This article will also be a silent apology to them for the misconduct of whoever cut the Sikh boy's hair.

If you are Sikh, if any Hindu friends of yours forward you this article, then write back to them a short note saying what you think. Promise to each other that you will both remember at the back of your mind for the rest of your lives the importance of maintaining Hindu-Sikh Unity, and will lose no opportunity to help make this Unity stronger.

Sat Shri Akal. Jai Shri Ram. Jai Hind.

Meena was arrested by a team of Rajasthan police, Vishal Bansal , superintendent of police, Jaipur said.

Dear Anonymous,

You are right; the Tenth Guru formalized the Sikh customs with regard to kesh, kripan, etc.

However, it seems that the customs were there before him too.

Thank you very much for your coment...

Harsh
